I was watching the Princesa Yelapa one day from a Playa Los Muertos condo balcony, when they spotted a pod of dolphins, they made a hard right directly into and cut off the pod just to get a closer look.

Sure we all want to see the sea life up close, but I was horrified to see such disregard for them. I swore that I would never patronize any boat run by Cruceros Princesa. After mentioning this story to a few locals, it seems what I witnessed was far from being an isolated incident by this tour operator.

Cruceros Princesa also owns Princesa Vallarta, Sarape and Vagabundo.

Mogens or one of the mods - could we trouble you to take that link and a copy of that list and tack it somewhere, maybe the top of this forum, for new visitors? Just so they know the boats that carry the proper identification, so they can make informed and mammal-friendly decisions about the whale watching trips they might be contemplating. Mil gracias. I seriously doubt there will ever be any kind of public statement from this company.

Thank goodness there were reputable operators close enough by to see and report this sad incident. There are a posters on T/A, that were on Geronimo recently who complained to the crew about how close they were getting to the whales, their complaints were blown off.

ther are now reports that a second whale has been hit and injured, this one a baby.

I think that group is gonna need to get alot more people to join to handle all the email they are going to get with all the publicity that is all over the internet.

The best that can come out of this horrible tragedy is to make people more aware that what is a thrill to us can be very stressful on the whales if it is not done properly.

I agree it is a horrible way for these great creatures to be maimed and killed . From a different perspective if this happened in Japanese waters they would be serving the whale up with a side order of fries or whatever they eat with their whale burgers .

The annual seal hunt is about to start in Canada . We get a ton of bad press and threats about boycotting Canadian goods . The hunt still goes on . I know this post sounds flip and how upset everyone is over the needless death of the whale. I definitely would never order a whale burger while wearing a fur coat . :?

To me it sounds quite hypocritical that they would all be so concerned with this whales health, (Just because it was hit), when we have been warned that the very act of going out there was causing them unnecessary stress.

I have taken one. The one with Open Air Expeditions, with the marine biologists, the ones who monitor, study, and do not stress out the whales.

PS, I fully understand the \"natural\" order of life and death....however this whale was injured by HUMAN action and as a result I believe that the HUMAN(S) responsible should be the ones to humanely deal with it. Maybe then they would think twice about their actions that caused this regrettable situation. At the very least, financial sanctions should be brought against them, large enuf to hurt.
Jennybean is absolutely correct in her description of Open Air Expeditions and what they do. Their tours are working tours, ie: pictures are taken and whales documented so they can be identified year after year. A large portion of the funds collected are directed to this program as well as the turtle hatchery program. They are also able to keep track of any whales that may be sick and injured.

as to your comment about \"northern visitors wanting to be one with nature\" is a load of dreck and shows your ignorance. 80% of the tourists on the boat the day I went on tour were MEXICAN.

Another new update. My friends in the project tell me the t-shirts are not affiliated with them and appear to be nothing more than a cheap attempt at prying more money from people for an illegal operation.

The other thing I was advised is that one of the tour sellers out there is telling people the captain of the Geronimo was fired, in hopes of increasing sales on that tour again. This is NOT true, my same source advises me as late as yesterday(Sunday Feb 11th) the same captain was at the helm of the Geronimo, still, as witnessed by at least two other boats.

Ok, I am opening this thread up again in hopes that we can all get along :D and so that more updates can be posted. If this ends up going off topic/course what have you :evil: it will be locked down again.
