Horseback riding safe????

Just read an article on another board that stated during high season there were some robberies taking place in the mountains while people were horeseback riding , apparently masked men stole cameras , money and cell phone from tourists.

Has anyone else heard of this , we have taken several horseback tours with no problems , is this an isolated event or is it becoming another unfortunate trend ?

When we were staying at the Holiday Inn ,three years ago a young couple from our resort were victims of a armed robbery while on one of the horseback tours. According to this couple it was them and a older German couple on the tour . The Germans had foolishly brought all their id with them and were robbed of everything . The woman from our resort steadfastly refused to give up her camera even though a gun was placed at her head. This is the same lady who lost a finger in a farm accident one week before her vacation. I could never figure out if she was tough as nails or smart as nails. :)

While vacationing in Hawaii a couple of years ago we were robbed while on our bus , the entire bus was stopped and armed men robbed everyone , I would hate to think that the trend is now happening in PVR but I guess where theres tourists theres money and cameras !

Unfortunate to be sure however it may make us rethink the horse back riding tours again .

JustBen hopefully \"isolated event\" would be a better description then \"trend\" . My hometown of Toronto is considered one of the safer cities of its size in the world. Yet everyday there are many violent and terrible crimes committed. PVR is not exempt from these cruel realities . From my way of thinking if this was a recurring problem the authorities in PVR and the tour operators would provide some form of security on these tours.
