Well said both of you. I have been going for over 20 years and treat the people, all of the people with the same respect I would want them to give to me. I have seen the fellow that Matt refers to many, many times. I have nothing but admiration for him. I guess some folks that are nothing at home, save a few bucks and then think they can lord it over their hosts, because they are spending a few bucks. But, I think those same people would do the same even in the US or Canada while on a vacation. I recall a patron in a Restaurant in PV complaining endlessly and needlessly about a meal served him. The Waiter smiled and tried to satisfy the complainer to no avail. Finally when his patience was worn out flat, he turned to the crank and said \"I guess it just tastes different from the Macaroni and Cheese you normally eat. I got up and applauded.

We have seen him many times, and I am embarrassed to say it never dawned on me he worked for tips. I will be making up for that error in my judgment in a few weeks, as he does perform an excellent service for us visitors. Thanks for pointing this out Matt.

Well said .......however I have also seen the reverse of what is being spoken about here.As a tourist ( visitor) to mexico I have always tried my best to treat people with respect and friendliness, this is almost always returned in kind by the people of Puerto Vallarta. I have noticed however a disturbing trend over the last several years more and more some merchants particularly in the Mercado are going out of their way to rip people off. I guess they figure they dont care the people wont be back , this combined with the timeshare fiasco in Puerto Vallarta I can see why some tourists get their back up .Not to try and exscuse the idiot on the bus yelling at the policeman but I run and operate a very succesful fishing lodge and I can tell you that if I treated my guests as I have seen people treated by TS goofs I wouldnt be in business very long . People save for a long time for these vacations to go and relax , if I has a OPC in my resort I would not stay in business for long !This I find to be the minority of people in PVR so like anywhere give respect and usually you will get it back!

That is a pretty generalized statement, would you mind elaborating on just how these merchants are trying to rip people off?

Oh, I forgot to mention the time I was UNDER charged by $9pesos. The little gal was completely floored when I brought it to her attention.

when we are in p.v. i find that when i come out of a restaurant, or any other place were tipping maybe expected i find that i tip on verage much more than i do when i am at home. i guess my tip is almost a days pay in some cases. so i can understand when they try to get every peso they can. m.m.

Well, I am about to take my 7th trip to Vallarta in less than 2 1/2 years. I have never come across a rude waiter, taxi driver, hotel staffer, beach vendor or even shark for that matter. I have always found the Mexican people that we \"tourists\" deal with to be kind, honest, and friendly. Maybe because I treat them with the same respect I like to be treated with. I find many people of my own country \"Canada\" to be much more rude and unfriendly.

Well, without trying to sound \"sappy\", I really feel that if I treat people like I want to be treated....................sound familiar? It really does work. Like a smile being contagious. It also works.

chuck, other than going to mexico for 34 years, (10 years for us ) everything you said is bang on. the people you are talking about also complain that there are to many mexican restaurants, and not enough english t.v. stations as well. why bother going away?

thanks for the kind words on us canadians. ( vancouver for us ) this may be true but last time in p.v. we met 3 families all from the states and hung out together all the time. we are still in contact with them. they were from N. Carolina, New York city, and just outside of Chicago. i think you get good and bad people from all over the place.

First off, I agree that when you are in another country you should blend in as much as possible. That is why when I am in Mexico, I try and at least ask for things in Spainish.

Let me just say that getting into Mexico is easy for Americans because we leave when we say we are. It is hard for Mexicans to get into the US, because they do not leave. As a resident of Southern California for the last 30 years. I have seen an increase in the traffice, longer waits in emergency rooms, higher state taxes, higher crime, all because this State has a problem with illegal immigration.

Sorry this is a hot button issue, here right now and I could not help myself.

I think everyone should go see Un Dia Sin Mexicanos when it comes out to the theater near you, it should be pretty eye opening, especially to residents in California.

I can say that statement is very untrue as there is not much of a local job market with exception to tourism. Very little agriculture, no fabrication or industrial jobs. Without tourism, I would say the vast majority of the working people of Vallarta would be jobless.

I am wandering if you are a Brit or a Canadien. I see many mispellings or typos, and I am sure I am guilty too, but the criticise leads me to ask that question. Not trying to be nosy, just curious.
