SICK AFTER RETURNING FROM PV

After doing just that for 21 years now, I am not going to stop now. You really can not be sure where the virus came from. Not right to blame it on a fruit juice vendor in my opinion.

Most people get sick from to much sun, booze and to little sleep.

My husband and I visted PV for our honeymoon. We had dinner at our hotel and that evening became very ill(stomach cramping & dirreah) until days after our return home. Although we didnt drink the water, we did share a frozen drink...could have been the ice. Next time we will know better.

PV is one of very few cities in Mexico that actually has water purification/filtration. They are quite proud of the system, you can take a tour by the water plant! My husband and I have been several times and only experienced problems on the way home after our 1st visit. We concluded it must have been the salad we ate the night before - whether the lettuce was not washed properly or the fact that it was warm when it got to us....we should have known better after the 1st bite...beware of warm lettuce!! I really do think the food vendors are safe enough to experience! Bottled water is great to carry around with you as well!!!

We stayed at the Krystal in PV for 10 years--always drank the water there as well as the restaurants we visited in PV. Never suffered any discomfort. Never drank bottled water unless traveling outside of PV.

Now, however, we have shifted our stays to Bucerias. There, we do drink bottled water in our rented house and the restaurants we visit.

If you have a weak stomach like myself....

NEVER DRINK THE WATER!!

To play it safe, only drink from bottled water!!

And be very selective as to what you will eat and where you buy it.

I was ill 2 times this past trip.
Yes from the food.
My mind did not tell me not to be ill I guess. :P :D
I was concerned I would not make my flight home.
6 Imodium pills and a few Advil for pain in a few hours helped me get home.
Thanks to our tour rep and bus driver and other guests for putting up with me.


When I got to the Airport the fellow( a local ) at the desk told me He too was quite ill that day from the food he had eaten at a Subway. So yes people do get ill when traveling and yes it is from the food not the air..
One can take all the precautions you want but it can happen to anyone anytime. Not everyone has stomachs made of steel but some do My husband seems to never gets ill from food :) and sometimes I envy that.

Thouroughly washed means squat, unless you use a microbe killer...rinsing alone does nothing... So guess your do not bother to wash your hands if water does no good? Where did I say rinsing? I agree & I do use the microbe killer if at all possible but a good washing & scrubbing WILL go along ways to prevent illness at least according to my MD! When in doubt PEEL!

Oh, yea, we have been sick at Disneyland and here at home...but NEVER in Mexico or the South Pacific or New Zealand...just here! Chuck... 8)

This October was the first time ever to be sick in PV. Everyone in our group had one day of what felt and acted like the results of drinking a LOT of cheap booze. Only thing we could think of that we all had in common was we attended Rhythms of the Night together and all ate a big supply of fresh green salad. The first to succumb was the next afternoon, 2 the day after that and one the 3rd morning.

:cry: I too got sick after eating salad, but only one time! It was our last night there, wanted some \"American food\" - got steaks and salads, and the plane ride home the next afternoon was awful! I have been 9 times since that first visit, never eat salad, never get sick!!!

I was there for 14 days. I did get sick once because of umm lets just say the drinks were going down to good that day. I drank water at the resort and was fine. everytime I was in town just walking around I always carried bottled water. My friend on the other hand was sick a few days. Not sure if it was something he ate or drank. I think it was a mixture of the anount of food, drinks, and sun he had

Never had a problem in PV in over ten years. I did have the revenge after a trip to Acapulco. I have also has food poisoning in NYC and the tap water in Chicago bothers me. The water is Edmonton is to hard and requires more soap to get my hair clean.

Once we rented a house for a month in PV and drank tap water with no problems. The landlord claimed there was a central filtration system in the house although I never saw it.

I got a cold four days after arrving here :( Love to blame \"PV\" for it, but alas, I cannot.

Stay home and eat and drink like you never did before and you will get sick. Some people do not think before they glutten themselves and drink like a fish because the booze is included in the tour, then they blame their blaughs on Mexico, Puerto Vallarta and the tour. Come on folks do not be stupid....act like a person and not a range free animal. Hope not to offend anyone but I have been on that mentioned tour and have seen the endless liquor bottle some folks take advantage then eat strange foods and deserts and drink more wine on top of that and when they get sick they <:-)-

It could happen to you...truth of it is you will never know if it was the water...the food...travelling....dehydration....over exposure to sun...too much alcohol....over indulgence of rich foods....if you have a sensitive stomach always travel with care and medication! I find if I am feeling a bit woozy or what have you I drink some bottled water for day or so....maybe eat a hamburger or club sandwich with fries ......try not to over due the sun i usually feel alot better and no real suffering.

I have been to several places in Mexico on four seperate trips. I did get sick on the first trip.
I eat garlic everyday along with a very spicy(hot) salsa a young woman showed me how to make on my second trip. That stuff keeps me alive and healthy on all my trips now.
Sorry to hear of your vacation illness.

I was in Cancun and never got sick.....a friend told me to eat yogurt for 2 weeks before going to PV and my doctor prescribed me Cipro. It is a RX for bacterical infections that you take IF you get the REVENGE. :oops:

I have gotten sick once in more than 50 trips and I believe it was from bad shrimp. As was posted in an earlier post it hit me within a few hours of eating. A local friend went to the pharmacy the next afternoon and brought back Bactrim, and it was like a miracle cure. The next morning all my symptoms were gone and I felt 85% better, by the next day I was back to 100%. While Cipro works, it is a very potent antibiotic with alot of side effects and Bactrim is an alternative that is readily available. Bactrim is a sulfa drug so if you are allergic to sulfa it will not be an option.

Another reason some people get sick easier than others besides the obvious too much booze, sun, etc. If you are taking any type of antiacid such as Prilosec, Zantac, etc. you are more susceptible to any bacteria you might come in contact with since there is less acid in your stomach to kill it.

While Cipro works, it is a very potent antibiotic with alot of side effects

My Doctor agrees with most of you. If you eat yogurt the culture must be left in it. It takes a huge about of yogurt eaten daily to be of benefit though. You can go to your health store and take it in tablet form. I have colitis and need all the good bacteria I can get. I use a product called flora smart.

As for... a daily dose of garlic to keep one healthy I think the Docs are smiling at us.
Of course :roll: one who eats garlic everyday will be healthy no one gets close enough to pass on germs. :P

btw... I love garlic and had my famous garlic toast last night.
just have to remember the parsley.

If you were going to get sick that would have done it. The bacteria is in the water so brushing your teeth with it would put the bacteria into your system. I never get sick from the water either, but the resort I stay at has a secondary filtration system. I drink the water there all the time and I also make sun tea and have no problems. I have stayed at some of the smaller hotels and I use the bottled water they provide to brush my teeth and for drinking.

The only time I have gotten sick was from spoiled shrimp during the slow season. Since the shrimp is imported and the cost is thus higher I think the resturant was just trying to push it one more day before having to discard it.

Thanks for fixing my faux pas about who built the water system. More info better. old time Mexician told me it was American but English is just as good :D

Well after more than 5 years living in vallarta, and almost exclusivly
eating at home, food i cook my slef I have been sick and in the
hospital 2 times 12,000pesos the first time 20,000 the second time.

We had a guest that wanted to eat out, i think the typhoid came
from that eating experience....in one of the better resturants.
my friends did not get sick, so i may have a weaker than
average system.

I get vaccinations for typhoid now, they are aroudn 80% effective
you need one every 3 years...not cheap in some places
but less than a hospital stay, just my 2 centavos.

I dont drink or smoke...so we can rule out iced drinks :)

I am glad so many of you have had good experiences or
the luck not to have food prepared by a carrier of something.

Roto Virus is mostly a kids disease here, after the virus
hits, which you can not control it with pills because its a virus,
the 2nd effects
are a bacterial infection of the stomach or more..and
can be treated, they are very fond of IV antibiotics here :)

I also am vaccinated for hep a and b, but to each his own.

the above is not to scare anyone, i continue to live here
hapily....and plan to continue to do so.
