Olympics

Just thought I would wave the old Stars and Stripes a bit. Yup! The U.S.A has won most total Olympic medals since 1886 than any other country. Even countries tht subsidise their atheletes or pay them cash when they win a medal. The U.S.A does neither. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All-time_Olympic_Games_medal_count

ps: looking forward to Mogens explaining why this is no big deal.

Have you ever seen anyone looking more bored and uncomfortable than President Bush during the opening ceremonys? By the way, according to the NBC announcers, the USA does now pay for medals. I was shocked at first but, considering how expensive it is to take gymnastics lessons and train and buy equipment for all sports, I can see it, for the real amateurs atleast, not Kobe Bryant and other pros.
Us die-hard NFL fans are watching pre-season football , gotta see how we are going to look this year and see who makes the team -GO VIKINGS, no time for the olympics or the overpaid basketball players who are going to tease a forign league with offers to play there-kobe ,james ,thay can kiss my arse for what they want and we save pennies for a 1 or 2 week vacation a year- football is no better than basketball on the money issue but I like the sport better- so I am right in my own mind
Olympic Payout
You are right Chuck - the Canadian govt is paying $20,000 for a gold , $15,000 silver and $10,000 for a bronze . Unfortunately there have been no payouts yet ! :)
Go Shawn Johnson!!
I have to put a plug in for Shawn Johnson of West Des Moines Iowa (about 15 miles from Ankeny). She is 16 years old, down to earth and an Olympic champion without a doubt!! We also have a graduate of Roosevelt High School in Des Moines, Lolo Jones that is a great athlete. Look out folks, these Iowa girls are going to kick butt! Go Shawn and Lolo!!
I note that Andy Roddick got eliminated in the very first round. That was a real disppointment.

The Chinese seem to be winning more than expected. Basketball and Mens Swimming look good for the US.

If Phelps gets the 8 gold he will become a mulitmillionaire from sponsorships whereas a Canuck would get $20k.
Well, Ronald, if that were the correct spelling (honour), it would be pronounced: \" On Our\", yes? How about if we both change the spelling to \"oner\". Chuck... 8)
I guess we should all be reminded that there are actually three ways of spelling... the Canajun, the Merican, and well... have you noticed that Bruce has a way about words as well.

\"The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well.\"
watching michael phelps in swimming is amazing. this guy is going for 8 gold medals in one olympics..all at the age of 23.
Bravo
Cudos to Natsia Luiken and Shawn Johnson for a spetacular show last night and into this morning (After midnight CDT).zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Yes some of the athletes are bred and trained to be winners and only winners... but then there are some athletes that embrace the motto that Sylvia has posted above. And those are the true gifts to the games and the sport. Thanks for sharing that with us Sylvia....

Take care one and all
Well, I still say that the whole point to a competition is to win. Otherwise, instead of the Olympics, and all the other venues that lead up to the Olympics and the qualifications, there would be: \"The All Around Pony and Rainbow Feel Good, Everybody is a Winner Get Together and Weenie Roast.\" Chuck... 8)
All I can say is that I feel pretty good that the Canadian team pretty much met all of my expectations and at this time appear to be on track for staying the course.

Our fencing team comprised mostly of farm boys from the West are outstanding in their field, some of the bigger gals are putting the shot right where it belongs, and our swimmers have decided to be gracious and not stand in the way of Phelps realizing his dreams.
congrats in order
