Volunteer work?

joe75 I checked the site you posted the link for and it looks like a very good organization.
When we were in PV at the end of Oct we went for a visit to the Orphanage.
We met 3 lovely young people who were from England that were on a 3 month volunteer program.
The young man we chatted with said his experience volunteering at the Orphanage was wonderful and very rewarding.
He also said there was no way he could go back to the job he had in Britain before he volunteered. He knew he had to work in a job where he made a difference in the World.

Thats nice you met my volunteers.

This type of thing in the UK is called Gap Year.....i.e take a year out after high school and before Uni and go off toa far flung place to help out. Its a normal thing to do in the UK.

Its strange as many countries do a gap year plan....it just seems to be the US as far as I know that does not?

How am I finding PV? Well it has its ups and downs. I have spent the last 4 years in South America, 2yrs living in Ecuador (cap =quito) where I was working as the rep for the same company. Before that I was a driver, tour guide for an Adventure Overland Company that did 4-12 week adventure tours around SA (look at www.dragoman.com) to get an idea. This means I have been lucky to have seen every counrty in South America.

PV seems a little toursity to what Im used to plus a little expensive. I really enjoy getting to off the beaten track and im finding this hard to do here as everyone wants to sell me a tour......its early days as I have only been here for 6 weeks....time wil tell.

There is an area on this board that is about off the beaten track.
I have read here about the places one can go to by just hopping on a bus . :)
Tours are good for those that want to see the sites and have adventures when they maybe do not have the time (one or 2 week vacation)to explore.
Sounds like you will be in PV for a longer period so will have plenty of time to explore.

Hi, In 2001 I spent 4 months in Puerto Vallarta working with Outreach International. I was amoung the second group of volunteers they sent out and worked on the Feed the Children project. I had a fabulous time and spent 3 months travelling after before heading home. I fell so much in love with Mexico I am now thinking of going back to do a TEFL course in Guadalajara to enable me to travel a bit more. To all who live there think yourself lucky - I am jealous. One of your co workers wrote this about the feed the children project in Puerto Vallarta.........
This place is amazing, the people, the landscape the food and most of all the children. Can’t believe how content they are with so little.

The people were fantastic, it was an incredible to see the dichotomy between the rich and poor in Vallarta, equally incredible how quickly you become used to the sights and smells of everyday life on a rubbish dump, not so much that you get hardened to it it just seems insulting to pity the people who have a complete lack of self pity. It was an honour to be accepted by them.

I found Vallarta to be an exceptionally friendly town and as I lived in an entirely Mexican area I feel I experienced a side of Vallarta maybe few people get to see.

Hopefully one day I will be back.
