Bring you ATM card and get peso as you need them. You can start at the airport machine or change window.

Just a note on the ATM card. The machines in PV will only accept cards with a 4 digit pin #.
Savings or chequing...no matter.
Thanks all, checked with the bank & they said no problem.Only 4 more sleeps!!!!!
just back
we took a bit of american money and then we used our atm card the rest of the time. once a day we took money out. no problems at all. we were warned ahead of time to put the money in checking. our bank charged 5 dollars each time we used it.
Re: just back
our bank charged 5 dollars each time we used it. If you have a Scotiabank account and withdrawal from their machines their is no withdrawal fee. I believe you can also use Bancomer, Serfin(sp?) and Santander without being charged a fee for withdrawing.
we bring US and Pesos when we come. Just something I prefer to do.
Just want to clarify for any newbies that there is no need to change Canadian into US first. Canadian dollars are accept everywhere. Why take the hit on the exchange.

example (rough exchange rates)

Cdn$100 = US$85 (using 0.85 to the dollar)
Cdn$100 = Pesos$900 (using 9 pesos to the dollar)
US$85 = Pesos$935 (using 11 pesos to the dollar)
Yes, you gained 35 Pesos(roughly 3 bucks) by using US$ but you lost $15 when you converted Cdn to US. So, when all is said and done if you convert Cdn to US you will lose $12/100.

I hope this makes sense because the more I read it the more confused I get.
Hi Lori,

We have always been told (even by the Signature Rep in the hotel) that Canadian $ is not appreciated as much as US or pesos. That is why we convert.

Take care.

Tracy
we exchanged CDN into pesos as well as CDN into USD. Then for good measure, we also took along some CDN for emergency funds.

Take care.

First trip to Puerto Vallarta we had travellers chegues and Canadian dollars. We arrived in the night and had not had a chance to convert Can. to pesos.
We went to tip the bellman with Can and he shook his head and asked us if we had different money.

We now tip with American dollars along with little gifts I bring from home and use pesos for everything else.
Just my loonies worth :D
Plus4 (and others)...there seems to be some confusion about the CDN dollars...Jennybean and palapa_gal are not saying that you can use (spend) CDN dollars in PV, only that they are easily exchanged for Pesos...they are also saying that US dollars are accepted, but as a Canuck
why bother...change CDN dollars directly into Pesos...sonofdob.
speaking of tears in money - we had a taxi driver refuse a 20 peso because it had a little tear in it. does a tear void a bill?

I was not confused as to what jennybean and palapagal were saying and I value their opinion and that is what this board is about is it not. To learn and get different ideas for when we travel to PV.
That said .. My husband loves tipping with American. He freely leaves the dollars behind as a gift to those that have served us. I would never take that pleasure away from him by telling him he should tip with pesos. :)

No right way or wrong way maybe just many different ways.
I just took some American money with me when I went and then used the ATM machine when I got there. But the first time I used it I took out 100 pesos without thinking. So I had to use the ATM again
The cambios are very helpful in getting smaller bills when you exchange. Just ask for \"billetes mas pequeños, por favor.\" You should receive $20 and $50 mp bills. This works well if you exchange between $50 and $100usd a day. This should give you enough small bills for tips. We are lucky by having a casa de cambio just around the corner from the GCP, so this works well and is not an inconvenience for us.
