Just wondering if anyone had a good suggestion on using a calling card service. I just checked and Verzion is .99 a minute.

Jajah
We use Jajah and its costs 6 cents a minute from a landline to anywhere in US/Cda. From a cell phone it is 30 cents a minute. Even if you have no internet, you can schedule the call from any internet cafe.

US 800 calls are also 6 cents a minute, much cheaper than using the 881 etc local numbers.
I purchased a inexpensive cell phone from TELMEX and buy minutes when I come to PV - one important note though - you cannot let the phone sit idle for more than 3 months otherwise they disconnect - so if you have a firend who can make a call from the phone occassionally it pays off.

The other option is to buy the pay phone calling cards - it cost around 50 cents per minute = much cheaper than Verizon.
TelMex Phone
We are going to P.V. on May 11th for 2 weeks. Where do we buy a TelMex Phone? So we can communicate with our family
How much are the calls after you buy the phone?
TelCel phones
TelCel phones are sold in kiosks in most of the malls. Downtown there is a stor at Insurgentes a block north of Farmacia Guadalajara. I bought a new SIM card for my GSM world phone there for 50p and that included 35p talk time. Then I bought a 500p card that gave me 900p of talktime credit.

Inbound calls are free (no air time charge) but outbound cost 18p/min to call the states and 8p/minute local. You have to register with their call center once (to combat using the phones for illegal activity).

Each year, just adding 100p will reactivate the phone number and any unused minutes that you purchased. If you buy a phone, it costs about 150p net of talk time but will be locked for use only with TelCel.
If you have a laptop with you...use Skype
Skype to Skype calling is free. Call to the US to a non-Skype user is 2 cents a minute. Get a web cam or a headset and you are good to go! It is the Bomb, baby!
