What are the most economical ways to call the US? Do calling cards such as prepaid AT&T calling cards work? And do you need to call from special phones? Help would be appreciated.

Re:Calling US?
You can purchase phone cards when you are here. Either the Latadel Card (via Telmex, local phone company) for 30, 50 or 100 pesos. Just use any telmex phone. Put the card in, dial your number. You will hear a beep when your time runs out. Another good one is the FoneWorld card. 100 pesos or 10USD. Scratch off the pin number on the back of the card, dial the 800 number on the back of the card and follow instructions (In English). The best part of these cards is that any leftover time you have, you can use at home. You can use these on most phones. Just STAY AWAY from the phones that say \"Use your credit card and call home!\" BIG surprise when you get your bill!!!!

Thanks Pam. Appreciate the info. So I would assume the AT&T cards are not usable at all, or are the ones purchased in Mexico just a better deal?
Re:Calling US?
Take it from me..USE THE PHONE CARDS YOU CAN PURCHASE IN VALLARTA!!! I made the mistake on my first visit calling collect to Chicago from the hotel. When I received my bill at home, a 7 minute phone call cost 68 dollars!! The second time I used a calling card from home and that, too, was outrageous. The 100 peso cards have 11 minutes on them and on many phones the time runs down on a screen so that you know how much more talking you can do.
If communication is a must try the Internet cafes. They are quite inexpensive and most have very cool atmospheres.

Re:Calling US?
It is just so much easier to purchase the cards here. Every day I have people asking me how to get their ATT cards, pre-paid phone cards (from wherever) to work on the phones. Less hassle by purchasing one here. They are available everywhere!
