Will they ever ask for receipts to prove that you have maximum and is that maximum for all goods brought back or just for the booze? Thanks!

We were 1100 USD over the allowance in 98 on our honeymoon to Guadalajara. As we did not wish to start our marriage on a lie we declared all. Customs went nuts asking where all we bought was & demanding details. I in exasperation stated \"I guess we should of lied like everyone else\"! At that they let us past with no duty charges. Still can not figure that one out. So my advise is do not declare extra they do not seem to know how to handle honest people!sshikner (Jul 22, 2005 02:14 p.m.):

U. S. Customs Tips
Your exemption is $400 (retail value) on articles acquired abroad if:
- Articles are for personal use or gifts.
-Articles accompany you.
- You have been out of the country at least 48 hours. (Mexico and the U.S. Virgin Islands are exempt from the
48 hour limitation)
- You have not claimed the exemption within the preceding 30 days.
You may include in this duty free exemption:
- 100 cigars and 200 cigarettes. Products of Cuba tobacco may be brought in only if acquired in Cuba.
- One liter (33.8 fl. oz.) wine, beer, or liquor if 21 years of age or older. Most states have restrictions on the
amount of liquor or tobacco which may be brought in.
Check with US Customs BEFORE you go re returning with medicines from Mexico. 50 dose limit on controlled medicines, with receipts, etc
