Postage and cell phones??

Sorry for the bad news, but yes, you will beat the mail home. Standard mail in PV can take up to three weeks or more to reach the US. You could opt for priority service but it is very expensive and can still take up to one week.
As far as the cell phone. I would not recommend it. I have known some people to end up with a huge bill for a short 5 minute call. All local stores carry calling cards and they are very inexpensive. There are pay phones on every street corner and most likely there will be one available on your resorts property. Just ask the staff at your resort. Have a great time on your trip.

Just do not call home using the phone in your hotel. Charges are very high. Buy a phone card when you get there and use the pay phones that are all over.

Postage to Europe was around 10.1 pesos I believe, so a little cheaper for US/ Canada. Phone cards can be bought for 100 pesos for 20 minutes. The only problem I found with phone cards was that if the number you were calling was not home, about 2 minutes were deducted from your remaining time. Other than that they are probably the best way to go. Like a previous poster said DO NOT call from hotel or from phone booth using credit card.

I love to send postcards & mailing them FROM mexico is half the fun. Often shops that sell postcards will sell stamps too but charge a bit extra for each one. I buy mine over a few days time, get them all written out, and make one stop to the main post office in off The Malecon... Mine usually take 4 to 5 weeks to arrive to both the States and Europe.

what We considered doing this year was buying postcards there and when we go next year sending them to our kids before we leave from the city that way they get them 3 days after we leave. I remember my parents sending us post cards when they were gone and it was a huge deal and thrill.
