Travel documentation (Entry/Exit)

I also recommend getting a passport because you will need to have one very soon to do any kind of cross border travelling. Here is an outline of the dates when a passport will be necessary.

December 31, 2006 – Requirement applied to all air and sea travel to or from Canada/US, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda.
December 31, 2007 – Requirement extended to all land border crossings as well as air and sea travel.

Definitely our Canadian system of issuing passports has improved . Most new passports are issued within 2-3 wks - usually closer to 2 . Expedited (faster) delivery can be arranged for a higher fee. For those of us that live in urban areas - you can even renew or apply through select post offices . Here in Toronto- the Postal Office just north of Yonge/Eglinton offers this service.

I have read on the Government Canada Web page we wont need our passports until 2008 for travel into mexico. As long as you are flying directly from Canada to Mexico. I hope this is true because we are going without passports. I have heard from some friends that they got through quicker without passports because they have different lines at the airport in Mexico for people with passports and those without. Those without passports got through much quicker because the line was so small.

Your posts have now made me nervous about not having passport. Unfortunatly we wont have time to get one before we leave. Hopefully they will let us stay in Mexico for our vacation.

We are back from our trip and thankfully no problems getting into PV without a passport.(we didnt even have to show ID at all) We arrived close to midnight. In and out of the airport in record time. We were the only flight arriving at the time, which helped.
I think the only anoying thing at the airport was the time share people who held up some of the people that were coming on our bus and we had to wait for them. No red light green light, it was all packed up. We were out of the airport with our luggage in less than 15min. WOW!

We went yesterday to get our passports the rush is slowing down. We were there for an hour.The women was telling us that before if you werent there by 6am to get a number you wouldnt get in that day isnt that crazy.The wait was 6-8 weeks ours will be here may 14th. We also realized if you do it online your in and out of there in about 10 minutes.174.00 plus 25.00 for photos and you dont have to worry about nothing for 5 years I recommend it.
