vacation rental deposits

I have been asked to send a wire transfer to a bank account. This is my first vacation rental. I do not know the agent or the owner....I would prefer giving a credit card number to hold the condo...i find it unusual and inconsiderate to ask for a wire transfer knowing full well I would have no recourse...at all!! OPINIONS AND/OR ADVICE PLEASE
