Veteran Visitor shares tips for 1st time vistors to PVR

Good post and advice . This was the first year that our hotel offered a comparable exchange rate to the cambios . One word of advice -try to get smaller peso denominations - the 500 peso notes are real hard for the merchants to make change for . We even had a few troubles breaking the 200 peso bills. The other issue would be getting a counterfeit bill - clerks routinely scrutinized the peso notes when we were paying - would be a shame to get a big bill that was bogus . Not that the counterfeit issue is particular to pesos - our Canadian $ has undergone extensive redesign because of phony bills.

On Wed the ship come to PVR and alll the prices downtown go up. stay home or go ona tour on wed 8)

We found this year that there are cruise ships in pretty much everyday except Sunday. You can check the local \"Tribune\" for a listing of when and which ships are in.

Unfortunately, this did not make it very easy to barter especially in the morning.

If you go shopping, go in the late afternoon once all the cruise people have returned to their ship, we found the merchants are more likely to take a lower price to make their last sales of the day.

The shops along the Malecon are crazy busy when the cruise people take their \"tours\". It was much easier to shop later in the evening.

Buy your taxi ticket at the booth by the east doors. The rates are fixed by destination. Custom is to tip the driver 10p for each bag he wrestles into his trunk. Across the bridge, the rates are negotiable and usually much lower.

Gigante is now Soriana. Mega and Walmart are also good for initial stockups. Costco can help with staples for longer stays. They have great sharp cheddar cheese.

All great tips. However Discover cards can not be used in Mexico. Luckily I checked before we went and had a Mastercard so I was fine.
