Re:Cancun or PV?
I prefer Puerto Vallarta, but you can have fun at both places. Cancun was literally built from the jungle back in 1974 as a city for tourism. Since you have been to Puerto Vallarta, I will try to compare it with Cancun.
As compared to Puerto Vallarta, Cancun has:
1) no old Mexico charm
2) more modern luxury hotels
3) more neon lights and discos
4) better beaches - clear blue water and beautiful white sand.
5) a feel like you are still in the US (i.e., like Miami)
6) some nearby Mayan ruins to explore (principally, Chichen Itza and Tulum)
7) no mountains
I prefer Puerto Vallarta for item #1 above, but both my son and daughter - who are probably much closer to your age - give Cancun the advantage. You should try both places and decide for yourself.
I went to Cancun last December and stayed at the Melia Cancun. It is very nice and built like a huge glass pyramid. I suspect that it is usually an expensive hotel, but prices were much lower when I went because of 9/11 and the economy (very few guests). Now, they are probably back up to normal.
Regards.
