Local bus you catch along the highway from Nuevo into El Centro (downtown) is about 30 - 40 mins. back south. Besides the beaches at the Nuevo resorts, you can walk or bus a short distance to Bucerias (small town w/ beach), or the beaches of Destiladeras and El Anclote (toward Punta Mita) between 10 - 30 mins. heading north.
Mayan Nuevo IS A PAIN IN THE ***
There is a beautiful beach on grounds but it and the pools are so far away from the main hotel unit that you need a cab just to get there. The pools are cold. No hot tubs, no balconies, No coolers allowed on grounds (and Resort beverages are $$$$ and to far to walk to your room). Cab is 100$ pesos pp. ($10us) from anywhere to and from Nuevo. Bus runs every 1/2 hour until 9pm but there is one shuttle and 2 buses to get downtown. With all the security guards I felt like I was in a maximum security facility! If you are a condo owner the condo units are well placed by the beach and a couple 100 yards from the pools. I enjoyed the Mayan Marina more, and many of the resorts in the hotel zone south ALOT better.

Funny, When I stayed there the buildings were right by the pool which is right by the beach. I usually buy water and partially freeze it and take it to the pool and or beach in my bag or wrap a cold soda or beer in a towel and take it in my bag. If you want to buy drinks you are stuck. They do offer and AI option I believe. You are a long ways from town but I managed to make it into town every day last Aug. The water in the pool was great. When we were there once in Jan. the pool water was very cold. I think because the pool is so huge. One of the largest in Latin America. The beach is fabulous. The ocean water felt great in Jan. though. If you want to go on one of the boat tours many of them will pick you up at the marina in Nuevo which is very close the Mayan. Saves a trip to town. Go and enjoy, but do go into town.
