Try the Torro de Oro,Its 1/2 block from the beach,walking distance to all the popular restaurants in the romantica zone.9 floors they have an elevator, restaurant,pool, lounge all on the main floor which steps right onto the street.Very safe area

Tropicana gets my vote, or Sun Suites Hotel, very clean, block from the beach...excellent area for everything.

I am also from MN, diabetic and fear losing a toe since I live my life in Vallarta and in sandals! I wish the best for your dad, it is a sucky disease and you are a very sweet son for doing this :)

I would have to suggest the Hotel Eloisa www.hoteleloisa.com. 1/2 block to the beach, across a dead end street from a beautiful park, very close to Rizos grocery store and many great eateries. Very clean and wonderful staff. If you get a suite, make sure it overlooks the park. That way, from the balcony, you can gaze to the right and see the bay, left and see the mountains, ahead is the park and all around is Old Town. The Eloisa has a real neat roof top pool and relaxation area. Two thumbs up! The RealDeal Chuck
