Timeshare purchase

We hear and read that timeshare is everywhere in PV.
Must be selling then.

What would be the benefit of buying into a timeshare as to going A1 or just renting the room.
Just curious. :)

I have owned a timeshare since 1988. I love PV and go there every year. The timeshare provides a known destination, in my case second floor ocean front. If you like PV enough to go back every year, and if you find the \"perfect spot\", a timeshare is an alternative to spending days or weeks finding a vacation spot each year. Note that I have a fixed unit, not a floating spot, in which you can easily end up in a unit overlooking a dumpster instead of the ocean. As an investment, forget it. There will be no residual value. Changes of ownership of the facility, unpredictable maintenance fee increases, etc., can and have been an issue at times. The key to owning a timeshare in PV, in my personal opinion, is to own a specific unit that you absolutely love and know will be available to you at a set time, plus knowing exactly what future maintenance fee increases will be and the quality of the organization that owns the faciltiy.

Unless you have everything lined up and set in stone, you should rent. A little hint: If you sign timeshare papers in Mexico, your ownership rights are not subject to protection by U.S. law even though the timeshare organization may have an office in the U.S. Sign all papers on the U.S. side of the border.

Thanks for the explaination , Eck . I understand the peace of mind that comes with knowing that you have found a location that is exactly what you want. We also prefer the AI route but realize not everyone thinks the same as us. Often we are questioned on why we choose to return to PV every year - surely we must want to try someplace new. Like you say if you find the \"perfect spot\" why would you go elsewhere ?
We have owned at Los Tules an oceanfront unit 1650 sq.ft. with 900 sq.ft. ground level patio, 50 feet from the pool and 75 ft from Cafe Chapultapec (Unit 6-113). It is definitely a little piece of heaven. We have owned since 1984. Same time next year! We see our friends from all over the US and Canada who also own deeded weeks and come back every year.

Just like a cottage! Except that the water is always warmer, usually 78 degrees in January. It is not a good financial deal when compared to AI trips but it has been a great lifestyle investment. We have 3 weeks so there are not any AI alternatives.
I must be the minority then . I have only owned it for 2 years now but I use my four floating weeks between quick vacations and my recent wedding in PV. Playa Del Sol is a beautiful 5 star condo, although I am sure I overpaid for it. I personally like to know what type of place I am staying at without the fear of being in a dump with my little time away. From Seattle to PV just ran me $700 for two adults and one child. The one I bought into is not a 25 or 30 year term, it is ongoing.Just my thoughts.
Before you buy at TS. Stay there first. Spend a week at other places. You will can find most have weeks for rent through the TS organizations for not much more than the maint. fee. It is a real pain if you buy, just to find that you really prefer the resort down the road. Check if there is a resale available. I just saw a week in PV available for $1000, the resort wanted $25k at their presentation.
