As the employees make around the equivalent of $5-$8 USD per day, tips are greatly appreciated.

That said, it is easier for them if you tip in pesos as they do not have to wait in line somewhere to exchange them.

Very easy, just multiply by ten. If you want to tip a dollar, give them 10 pesos, two bucks = 20 pesos, and so on. JMHO

Thanks so much to both of you! I was actually just thinking about posting a note in General Travel tips about tipping. My husband and I are not experienced travelers and we really want to tip appropriately but had no idea what that is! This is so helpful.

For the Canadians , tipping in loonies or toonies is double trouble . Coins are either impossible or very difficult to convert to pesos. Since the smallest Cdn paper money is $5 , we always bring a bunch of US $1 for tipping. I agree pesos are preferable but as mentioned above the smaller peso notes are hard to get. On the return of our last trip , I swapped about about $50 paper money for toonies and loonies for one of the hotel workers- gave the airport metal detector a good test!

Having read the very good info on tipping, if I tip the Maid by leaving money under the pillow for instance, does she get to keep it all or is it pooled?

I do the same thing! If I am going to the States, I ask my favorite bartenders, coffee shops, etc if they have quarters they want to exchange for pesos, as US coins and Canadian coins are worth NOTHING! You cannot exchange foreign coins ANYWHERE in Vallarta.

In regards to the maid, normally they do not have to split tips, unless the have a helper they are training in. Rule of the thumb for leaving money for the maid, leave it on the pillow, pretty much a world wide symbol that the money is for the maid. If you leave it on a counter top or dresser, she may assume you just left some money laying around.

My sister in law had a summer job as a maid in one of the nicer resorts around here many years ago. Her supervisor used to go to the rooms on check out days and scoop the tips before the room was cleaned. That thought always makes me try and give the tip to the maid in person. I know thats not always possible. Often my wife will leave makeup, magazines,books etc. for the maid. She always leaves a handwritten note saying they are for the maid - just to discount any ideas of theft. I am always amazed and delighted when the housekeepers fold the towels into birds or they leave big flower blossoms on the pillows-little touches that make your holiday more special and are well deserving of a few $.
