Vista Playa de Oro

I will be staying at the above mentioned hotel on Dec. 28 - Jan. 4 with two of my homeboys. I have never been to PV before so can you please tell me:

1. What is the status of this hotel after the hurricane? I have heard that it will be closed until 15 Dec 02. Any confirmation?

2. How is the hotel in general? Is it nice, clean, close to the nightlife, etc.

Muchos gracias mi amigos!

Re:Vista Playa de Oro
I have heard that Playa de Oro suffered some damage on the first floor in some areas and that the swimming pool and beach facilities were wiped. However, I suspect it has been cleaned up by now and that you can expect everything to be OK. Employees are great and prices are reasonable. Location is such that you can walk down the beach to other hotels and you are only a short cab ride or a long walk to the center of town where the center of the nightlife is.

Only thing I will say, having been there many times, is that you should under no circumstances consider buying a timeshare from the people at Playa de Oro or Vista Club.

Why do you suggest a person NOT buy a time share at this property?

I have a \"report\" that I wrote when I went to Puerto Vallarta, back in 2001. If you want it, just write to me!

You cannot trust the owners of the Marina de Oro/Playa de Oro facilities to abide by the time share contracts. They will charge maintenance fees far in excess of contractual agreements. Time share owners have had to ban together and hire a lawyer in PV to challenge the practice, and they have already won one judgement.
Re:Vista Playa de Oro
I walked by the Playa de Oro several times, both on the beach and out in front, on about December 1. It is undergoing major renovation work. I would guess they are using the forced downtime to redo all hotel rooms. The restaurant and pool area must have been totalled from the hurricane. There was major earth moving equipment in there. It looked like alot of new concrete was going to be poured. I would guess it would be another couple of weeks at best before reopening.
