First, I purposefully have rebar sticking up on my roof and it is for \"tax purposes\" as stated above. I live here and cannot stand to see the litter either. It will take more education. If the child sees the parent toss their trash out of the bus window, then they are going to think it is ok. I have to rake and pick up trash from my yard every day. I live HIGH on a hill and I swear, it appears from nowhere! We now have to put our trash out AFTER 9pm..this was a good move EXCEPT for restaurants and bars...poor timing for them. There are a few \"Beach and Bay Cleanups\" but they are too few and far between...slowly but surely the children are being educated as to the importance of this. Now, if only we could educate the ADULTS who own boats to NOT dump their \"stuff\" in the bay...I know, cutting my own throat here since we rely on tourists to do the tour thing...I thought I had seen trash here until I visited the Dominican Republic. It is piled everywhere you go. Many people still do their wash in the river here...the new trash cans are a GREAT improvement. I remember Semana Santas with literally MOBS of people and not a trash can in site! I guess this dissertation is sort of unorganized but just trying to make a few points...culture, education, poverty...things extremely difficult to change/improve. The culture is the beauty of this place. The sadness is the poverty and lack of education for many. It is just not possible to compare Mexico with the US or Canada..it is like comparing apples and oranges. I dread the inevitable coming of graffiti. My latest visit to Guadalajara, I was amazed at the graffiti...everywhere! As bad as litter. The answer to all of this? Patience and education!
