We stayed at the Tropicana from March 25 – Apr 1, 2006 and this hotel lived up to all my expectations and exceeded some of them!
The best thing about this hotel is its location. What a spot! Located on the best part of the best beach in Puerto Vallarta, the Tropicana is located right on Los Muertos beach in the “Old Town” of Puerto Vallarta. It’s within walking distance to many great restaurants, bars and shopping.
The open-air lobby is clean, spacious and staffed with professional, friendly, helpful and extremely efficient staff. We arrived at 7:30 AM and our check in took only minutes but, as expected, our rooms would not be ready until later that day. The hotel immediately had the bellboy show us where we could store our luggage until our room was ready. There were also large bathrooms in the lobby where we could change our clothes and freshen up.
When we were eventually shown to our room, it was on a lower floor, but ocean facing, it had a king size bed but no T.V., which, for us, was fine. (Who wants to sit in a hotel room and watch T.V. while you’re on vacation?) The view was wonderful, even from the lower floor. There was a bit of mold on the bathroom ceiling but hey, it’s the tropics and the hotel is 40 years old.
The Breakfast buffet that came with the room, didn’t have a lot of variety but we could have ordered alternatives if we chose. Coffee was good and they had fresh squeezed orange juice.
The Lunch menu, on the other hand was great, there was lots of variety, everything from Mexican to seafood to sandwiches and the hamburgers were not huge, but they were darn tasty. Waiters were all wonderful! The drinks were excellent, lots of variety and not watered down at all! The bartenders were efficient, friendly and fast! They would bring bucket after bucket of ice-cold beer all the way down to the beach for us!
The pool area was really nice; loads of loungers available, but we spent our days at the beach so never really made use of them. The hotel has a person who will set up chairs, table & umbrella for you and make sure that no one takes them. Once you put your towels down, those are your chairs for the day. They only put chairs out as required so there are no disappointments. The nice thing is that they don’t put you on top of each other, the beach is very wide here so there is TON’s of room!
In summary, this is a terrific hotel in a fantastic location. I think it’s one of the best values in PV and can highly recommend this hotel to anyone, perhaps with the exception of anyone who prefers a 5 star AI type of property. We will definitely return to this property next year!
