Bad taxi experience to the airport

We have been taking Taxis all over Vallarta since January: to and from
Sams/Walmart
Costco
Home Depot
Numerous restaurants, including Teatro Limon by Marina Vallarta
Marks in Bucerias

and all have been great experiences. From Home Depot, we loaded up and got to our condo in Alta Vista for 140p. We have been to Marina Vallarta for 80p.

Imagine our surprise when the taxi driver tried to soak us 150p for a trip to the airport. This guy stood by while I loaded 2 suitcases in and out of his trunk then asked for 150p! I said no way that 100p was maximum without help with the suitcases.

He said that it was 20% more because we called him out (to Felipes, a half block from our condo). We were not making any progress until I wrote down his Sitio 9 and his taxi number 289 and promised to report him to The Profeco, then he agreed to 120p.

We had gotten complacent because of all the good experiences but now will have to negotiate ahead of time again. Too bad about one bad apple. Beware the ripoff artist.

At least I get to try again when I leave on May 15th.

Apparently the taxi rates have just gone up and 150p might be the current fair price - a 25% increase and 50% more than we paid to get to Marina Vallarta last weekend. (We have gotten from the Marina to Alta Vista for 80p but not a callout.)

Sorry to hear you got ripped ,when my friends go to the airport from the hotel it is funny to ask how much from the hotel to the airport (to mas dinero) maybe 10 or 12 dollars ,but if you say nesicito el aeropurto ,cuanto dinero? its usually cheaper, we dont live there and if we try to speak the country language you get a little more respect ,and lucky enough you may learn some spanish ,if your cabbie likes to talk, my spanish is by far correct but they seem to understand and it works fine ,even if I dont say it correct, just another reason I LOVE MEXICO
