Car Rental Cost

Does anyone know how much would I be expecting to get charged to rent a small car with a CD player for a week?

In Cancun I paid about $55 per day, hopefully I can get a similar deal in PV.

If you can book one of those Mexico-only economy cars on the Internet, you will get an amazing deal. We got a weekly rate of $125/wk for 3 weeks (from Avis but their lowest rate was $225). You will need to supply your own CD player but IF you can get a deal like that, buy yourself an iPod with the FM transmitter module with your savings!

BTW make sure you have your own CDW insurance or your savings will evaporate. We just had a Peugeot in Spain for 3 weeks and 2365km for a total of only E169! (US$200)
It was an internet-only deal from a consolidator. When I checked it out from Avis at the airport, I asked what the local rate was had I walked up. They quoted twice as much for the same car.

Last year, we booked online while we were there for a 5-day trip to San Blas. Just used one of the PV sites and took the lowest price. Advantage Rent-a-car: $2900 pesos for 6 days last February.

One caution. You should have your own CDW coverage and prove it or they will charge almost double. We have it as an option on our credit card. Most Auto Associations do not cover Mexico. Also they charge for every extra driver. Decline any gas fillup offers. There is a Pemex station just north of the airport (cash only).
Insurance
CDW = Collision Damage Waiver

Whether MasterCard has that coverage is something you should call your card provider about.

kcowan is correct though, supplemental insurance is 100% vital and necessary.
Car rentals
Most places are about $40.00 usd/day with ins. included for a V.W. convertable. (usually the cheapest but the most fun)

The type of car and the price sounds exactly what I would want to rent.
Car rental
The name of the place is Prestige rent a car. Phone # (322) 22-265-06, They rent all kinds of cars not just V.W.s. They are located right across the street from the Tropicana Hotel lobby on Emiliano Zapata.
OK I rented a car from Dollar Rent-a-Car and they told me it was MANDATORY for me to get Liability insurance.

I told them my MasterCard provided the CDW but was told I could not rent a car without paying for liability insurance as well. Is this true?

I didn´t protest because I ended up paying $36 USD for a day´s rent and the car was a small compact car with a CD player, you cant beat that price anywhere.

The only problem I had with Dollar is they put a hold of about $1,000 USD on my credit card. They told me they usually put a hold of $1,500 dollars but my account only allowed them to do it for 1,000 so that´s what they did. That´s not much of a problem, that happens in the US as well. The problem is its been about 4 days since I returned the car and the hold is still there. So right now my credit card is maxed out, cant use it, all because of the hold. This is something everyone needs to be aware of.

I already went back to Dollar-rental car and was told in 24 hours the hold would be gone. I called my credit card four days after I returned the car and was told the hold was still there and it could take up to 2 weeks for the hold to clear up unless Dollar called. I´m going to go to Dollar again although I already know what they´re going to say.
They were feeding you a line. I have never had them tell me the insurance was mandatory, they try to sell it to you but if you tell them you have CDW coverage through your credit card they should accept that. By the time you pay them for the additional insurance coverage, there goes you good daily rate!!! I have used four or five different car rental agencies in PV and never had a problem with them refusing to rent to me unless I take out mandatory insurance, Magno just happens to be my #1 choice because of price and never having any problems.
