Taxi Drivers

¿Habla español? I try to greet the driver and give our destination in spanish. After that we usually converse a bit during the drive. I have never had a rude driver, either in PV of between PdC and Akumal. Most like to tell about their family and why they are driving a cab.
I know most people do not tip the drivers, but if we talk, have fun, get there safe and pronto, they get a little extra $dinero$ with their fare.

I agree with Chuck, Pez and Smitty on this... when we grab a taxi and once we are on our way, we ask their name in spanish, introduce ourselves in spanish, Lorrie likes to use her limited spanish to ask them about their familias, bambinos, etc... and most times they will talk to us in both spanish and english, depending on the question and how comfortable we have made them feel talking to us... we too have had the sullen type that is get in, hold on, and screeech to a halt and we are at our desitination....

some of these guys own their own cars and work like dogs to make ends meet, and then some drive for somebody that might own two or three cars or more... so they might not get as big of a cut of the pie, so they are working hard to make runs and tips... more people in and out of the car the more they make...

we only took a taxi twice while we were there we used the buses but both times we had great drivers the one back to the airport had me in stiches he was very funny.

we had one on our trip that only turned and looked forward ONCE!!! He was very social and friendly, had a great time helping my son while he tried his limited spanish out, but it was TERRIFYING!!!! He was a firm believer in eye contact. At all times. Yipes. But hey, we lived through it, so guess he must have some skill, or luck, or something. lol
IMO, the taxi drivers are like any other person you will find anywhere else inthe world. Some are nice, some are rude, many times it depends on their day. JMO

We had one taxi driver that entertained us by singing into his radio transmitter! He said he was a cousin to Axel Rose (yeah, we believed that one) and he cranked up the music and we all sang to Knock, Knock Knocking on Heavens Door. Oh and did I mention that mounted behind the rear seat were 2 gigantic speakers? My ears were ringing for 3 hours after I got out of the car! What a hoot.
