Americans Discover Mexico’s Allure

The Mexican government is seeing a surge in Americans seeking a new life south of the border. Compared to the first four months of 2023, twice as many U.S. citizens (625) obtained residency permits in Mexico between January and April of 2024.

This trend isn’t new. Permanent residency permits for Americans have jumped nearly 70% since 2019, reaching a record high. Mexico City, Jalisco, and Quintana Roo are the hottest spots for U.S. relocation, attracting nearly half of all American migrants.

Experts suggest lower living costs, healthcare, and rent, along with job opportunities in Mexico, are fueling this southward migration. It’s a fascinating flipside of the coin to the well-known story of people seeking opportunities in the United States.

While Mexico has always been a popular vacation destination (over 36.7 million U.S. visitors in 2023!), this migration trend marks a significant shift. Reports suggest the number of Americans moving to Mexico has quadrupled since 1990, potentially including U.S.-born children of Mexican heritage returning home.
