Vallarta is firmly establishing itself as a top destination for Canadian travelers, a distinction highlighted by a remarkable surge in visitor numbers and significant infrastructure investment. The city’s growing appeal is fueled by expanding air travel options, diverse experiences, and a major airport modernization project centered on sustainability.
The numbers strongly reflect this boom: from January to June 2025, the arrival of Canadian tourists surged by almost 12% compared to the same period last year, reinforcing the city’s position as the second most popular entry point nationwide for Canadian travelers. This local success mirrors a national trend, as Mexico welcomed 2.64 million Canadian air travelers in 2024, representing a 7.1% annual increase.
To comfortably accommodate this explosive growth, PVR is undergoing a massive 9.2 billion pesos (US$492 million) modernization. The project includes constructing a massive new 74,000-square-meter terminal with 15 additional boarding gates, which will effectively double the airport’s operating capacity. Expected to be completed by 2027, this investment ensures the airport is future-proof and ready to handle the increased demand.
