Iconic Puerto Vallarta Sign Has Been Restored

The iconic “maxiletras” of Puerto Vallarta have been beautifully restored and redecorated by Marcela Lepe Quiroz, daughter of the renowned painter Manuel Lepe Macedo. Assisted by her nephew, Luis Lepe, Marcela has brought back the vibrant colors and distinctive style of her father’s naif art.

These letters, which spell out “Puerto Vallarta,” are now ready to return to their prominent spot on the Malecón, next to the famous Boy on the Seahorse  sculpture, where they have become a must-see photo opportunity for both tourists and locals.

The restoration process took approximately a month and a half, with nearly 20 days dedicated to painting. Marcela worked on the sign in her home, capturing the essence of her father’s art. She described the new design as full of life, light, and bright colors, true to Manuel Lepe’s style. The letters will soon be reinstalled on the Malecón, with a special anti-graffiti coating to protect them from potential damage.

The reinstallation is expected to be completed within a week, thanks to the support of local hotelier Gabriel Igartua and the coordination with Brenda Díaz, director of the Instituto Vallartense de Cultura.
