The new Mismaloya Pier has been officially inaugurated, following a major $82.2 million peso investment aimed at modernizing the region’s southern coastline. The new structure features a high-capacity dock that can accommodate three vessels simultaneously, alongside a scenic 350-meter linear park and a modern boardwalk. This project is a key link in the state’s “nautical staircase” strategy, designed to improve maritime connectivity between downtown’s Playa de los Muertos and popular southern beaches like Boca de Tomatlán and Las Ánimas.
The renovation replaces a long-deteriorated structure with a multi-functional space that includes an entrance arch, a spacious lookout point, and over 900 square meters of pedestrian walkways. To enhance the visitor experience while protecting the environment, the site was upgraded with eco-friendly lighting, native landscaping, and urban furniture. Local authorities also plan to add artistic murals and installations to celebrate the city’s identity, providing a safer and more aesthetic hub for tour operators heading to the Los Arcos marine park.
Beyond its modern utility, the new pier honors Mismaloya’s status as a legendary cinematic landmark. The area gained international fame in the 1960s as the filming location for Hollywood classics such as The Night of the Iguana and The Scarlet Buccaneer. By combining this rich history with modern amenities and improved maritime access, the project aims to revitalize the southern zone and provide a world-class experience for both local residents and international tourists.
