Authorities in the Bahía de Banderas and Puerto Vallarta region are strengthening strategies to ensure a peaceful coexistence between humans and crocodiles. According to Daniel Graf Pérez, Director of Natural Resources for the Ministry of Environment and Territorial Development (Semadet), there are an estimated 350 adult crocodiles in the area, which is considered a critically low number for the species.
In response to recent human-crocodile encounters, Semadet has collaborated with local authorities on a coordinated plan. As part of this effort, both Puerto Vallarta’s municipal government and Civil Protection will reinforce their joint protocols with Semadet and the federal Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources. This initiative aims to address the issue more comprehensively and ensure a swifter, more integrated response to incidents.
Additionally, a new public awareness campaign will be rolled out. Municipal, state, and federal agencies will work together to design and install new signage that clearly communicates where crocodiles are present and provides clear guidelines on how to coexist safely with them. Furthermore, the Business Regulatory Council and the Business Corridor of Puerto Vallarta and Valle de Banderas are partnering with Civil Protection to implement satellite monitoring technology. This collaboration will provide early warning alerts and valuable data to help track the animals.
