Puerto Vallarta has officially secured its spot as one of the top 10 safest cities in Mexico and remains the safest city in the state of Jalisco. According to the latest National Urban Public Security Survey (ENSU) released by INEGI in late January 2026, the city continues to be a national leader in public peace. Despite the challenges of its rapid growth, Puerto Vallarta stands as a tranquil outlier in a region where safety concerns are much more common.
The data shows a significant gap between Vallarta and the rest of the country. Only 32.0% of Vallarta’s residents reported feeling unsafe—a remarkably low number compared to the national average of 63.8%. Within Jalisco, the difference is even more striking: while nearly 80% of residents in Guadalajara feel insecure, Puerto Vallarta maintains a much higher level of community trust. This puts the city in elite company alongside other safe havens like Mérida and San Nicolás de los Garza.
This sustained safety is the result of disciplined cooperation between local, state, and federal authorities. Under Mayor Luis Ernesto Munguía González, the city recently approved an investment of over 315 million pesos specifically to strengthen the police force and upgrade security technology. By prioritizing high-visibility patrols in the Tourist and Romantic Zones, the city ensures that both locals and visitors can enjoy the bay with peace of mind.
