Whale Sightings Break Bahía de Banderas Records

Observers have recorded more than 100 humpback whales concentrated in Banderas Bay. North of Puerto Vallarta, the breeding area is completely overflowing: mothers, calves, and males are competing for space in waters that seem to be boiling with activity.

Ecobac reported an average of five whales per hour, more than double the normal rate. The warm waters are keeping them here longer than usual, while the abundant baitfish in the coves provide ideal conditions for courtship and reproduction. Whale-watching boats are struggling to keep up with the high demand.

Humpback Whale migration to Banderas Bay and Puerto Vallarta

Families are making the most of the morning excursions during this peak of the season — one of the biggest in the past decade. Authorities are enforcing strict protection protocols to ensure harmonious coexistence between whales and vessels.

Beaches are reporting a 67% increase in sightings. The warm weather has extended into March 23, encouraging the whales to stay longer in the bay. A nearly 50-meter breach has become the unforgettable highlight of many tours.

Among the best options are the catamaran tours. Hydrophones let passengers hear the males’ songs live, while guides attach satellite tags for scientific research. The northern part of the bay is living its usual intense drama, just as it has in previous years.

The catamarans set sail at dawn with a gentle breeze. Children shout with excitement at every jump, while adults marvel at the powerful tail slaps that echo across the water. The favorable climate has extended the season and is boosting ecotourism in the region like never before.

The intense maritime traffic creates stress for the whales, which is why authorities have reinforced safety distances. Calves stay in more protected zones, and the “bulls” (males) continue their constant challenges and territorial disputes. Families watch everything safely from the catamaran railings.

Puerto Vallarta has gone fully whale-crazy. Hotels are maintaining strong occupancy, and weekends fill up fast, so it’s best to book in advance. The massive breaches, the melodies of the sea, the spy hops, and pure emotion define every trip out on the water.

Locals are following these trends closely. The abundant plankton is keeping the whales in the bay, with no need yet to migrate to the Arctic. The pods continue feeding and breeding in these protected waters, making this one of the most spectacular seasons ever remembered in Puerto Vallarta.
