Puerto Vallarta is launching a significant reforestation initiative, planning to plant 5,200 trees to offset environmental damage caused by the new Guadalajara–Vallarta highway interchange. This ambitious program, titled “Árboles de Plaza en Plaza” (Trees from Plaza to Plaza), invites citizens to adopt ornamental trees and receive expert guidance on their care, enriching the city’s ecological landscape.
Bartolo Cruz Romero, the Director of Environmental Sustainability for Puerto Vallarta, announced the program, emphasizing its goal to involve the community directly. During the upcoming rainy season, from June to September, the program’s mobile module will visit various public plazas every one to two weeks. Each adopted tree will come with a technical sheet providing details on its species, common name, uses, and essential recommendations for planting, management, and ongoing care.
The primary objective of the program is clear: to promote reforestation, urban greening, and environmental protection, while actively fostering citizen participation and ecological awareness. The initiative will include native species well-suited for urban environments, such as parotas, primavera, rosamorada, ciricote or cordia (known for not lifting sidewalks), arrayanes, lluvia de oro, various fruit and citrus trees, and native guajes. Additionally, large higueras (fig trees) and ceibas, already approximately two meters tall, will be distributed.
