Mexican Navy personnel protected 108 sea turtle hatchlings on Playa Los Muertos after spotting them during a foot patrol tied to Operation Lifesaver Summer 2026. The discovery was reported from Puerto Vallarta’s Twelfth Naval Zone and adds a conservation angle to the beach-safety patrols running during the summer visitor season.
Local and national reports say the hatchlings emerged from a nest on the beach and were collected in suitable containers before being turned over to municipal environment and ecology authorities. They were then taken to a turtle camp for protection and monitoring before release, a standard step when crowded beaches, lights, predators or foot traffic could put newborn turtles at risk.
The rescue is a reminder that Puerto Vallarta is an important nesting area for four of the world’s eight sea turtle species. Authorities noted that only about one in every 1,000 hatchlings survives to adulthood, which is why visitors should keep distance from nests, avoid touching turtles or eggs, and alert lifeguards or authorities if they see hatchlings on the sand.
The operation connects directly with Puerto Vallarta’s broader sea turtle protection programs and the seasonal beach-safety operation, which Navy reports said would continue through August 30.
