Puerto Vallarta International Airport Data

General Airport Information
Puerto Vallarta‘s International Airport (Licenciado Gustavo Díaz Ordaz [Code: PVR]) is well connected to North America’s major airport hubs, both in the US and in Canada.
Scheduled flights operate from several U.S. cities: Chicago, Dallas/Fort Worth, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, and more (for a full list see airline routes) and some of Canada’s main cities (Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, Calgary, and Edmonton).
PVR Airport passengers per year
Within Mexico, there are regular flights to and from Guadalajara, Tijuana, Toluca, Mexico City, Cabo San Lucas, and others (see complete list).
Many direct flights from Canada are operated by charter services. Otherwise, flights can be booked through Air Canada or US-based airlines.

The airport is served by many major airlines and countless charter companies: Aeromexico, Air Transat (Charter), Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Canada 3000 (Charter), United, Delta Airlines, among others.
Landing in Puerto Vallarta
We offer a video by Eduardo M showing a landing on an Interjet flight at Licenciado Gustavo Díaz Ordaz Airport, arriving from the NE side. There’s a diagram below that shows different points along the way, and some places are shown in the video.

Airport Terminal
The main level (street level with free access) of the Puerto Vallarta Airport offers several small shops and small fast-food restaurants and bars. A post office, a bank, a currency exchange, and several magazine bookstores are also located on the main level. It is here that you’ll find the check-in counters for the various airlines that serve this city.
At the end the escalator to the second floor and access to gates
At the airport, most telephones accept credit cards, but we recommend you use the Telmex public phones. These give a better rate. Go into one of the airport shops and buy a “Ladatel” telephone card (30, 50, or 100 pesos depending on your needs; for international calls, the minimum amount left on the card must normally be 20 pesos).
Flight check-in, plus domestic and international flight arrivals, are all on the main level. International and national departure passengers must all go to the upper level to get to the departure gates. You go through security and then have access to stores, restaurant bars, duty-free shops, and the gates themselves.
International and National Flight check-in counters on the ground floor
The second level of the airport, before entering the security checkpoint, offers a few fast-food restaurants and shops, including souvenirs. You’ll find better food and drink prices here than past security. You get to the second level by elevator, mechanical stairs on the SW side, or normal stairs at various points within the main level.

Duty-Free Stores at the PV Airport
Once past the passport and security check-in area, there is a large lounge/waiting area with duty-free shops (liquor and perfumes). This is Hall A. In addition, there are some bars, cafes, and restaurants in the lounge area as well. You can wait for your boarding call here, check the arrival and departure screens from time to time, and confirm your gate.
PVR Airport Diagram
Passengers on flights to most destinations within Mexico depart from a small group of gates on a level below (down a short flight of stairs from the main lounge). There’s a small waiting area with seats that you can use before boarding your flight. Sometimes it’s crowded, so you can wait above (better air and there are restaurants and stores) and go down when the time comes to board the plane.
Passengers on international flights depart from the newer gates in Terminal B, which you’ll find at the end of a long corridor that goes NE from Terminal A. It has 8 gates on both sides of the terminal building. There is a duty-free store there and a few restaurants and fast-food stands.

Puerto Vallarta customs checkpoint
At customs, you’ll put your luggage through a scan and will be asked to press a button. One person per family. If you get a green light (I always have), you pass without a review. If you get a red light, all your luggage will be checked.
The Shark Tank (Timeshare Sales)
See how to get through the Airport TS Shark Tank
Once you are on your way out of customs, you’ll go through an area full of timeshare salesmen and women (also known as OPCs) before you are able to get to the airport hall outside. Unless you want to waste your time, try to get out as soon as possible. You’ll be offered free taxis, tours, and maybe even money, but it’s all TS BS if you ask me, so better keep your sights set on your goal, to get out of there ASAP!
Once you are out, go to one of the taxi stands by the door out to the parking lot and pay your taxi fee there, unless you’re being picked up, or you want to take the local bus/normal taxi to the left by the highway.
The step-by-step process out of the airport would be:
- Get off the aeroplane into the terminal or onto
- the tarmac, into the bus, and then into the terminal.
- Go to the immigration booths and choose the one for tourists or Mexican nationals, depending on which category you are in.
- Go to the baggage claim carousel and get your bags, if any.
- Go to customs, pass your luggage through an X-ray machine, and press the stop/go button when asked to.
- If you get a green light, walk straight out. Do not stop to talk to the TS sellers. Don’t even look them in the eye (unless you are very brave).
- Walk out the automatic glass doors on the left and into the main lobby (a large open hall).
- Go to the official taxi counters and buy your ticket for your zone.
- Head outside and someone will point you to your taxi.
- Enjoy your stay in Puerto Vallarta!

Ground Transportation
Puerto Vallarta International Airport Gustavo Díaz Ordaz is located in the northern section of town, just north of the Marina Vallarta area.
Transportation to and from the airport is mostly done by taxi (Aeromovil) or combi bus (colectivo minivan). Taxi and combi bus charge rates are based on zones of travel. Taxis and combi minivans are paid for before entering the vehicle at a small kiosk located just before leaving the terminal building exit. Once you have obtained your ticket, you’ll be escorted to your vehicle. The ticket is then handed to the parking attendant at the parking lot exit and you are on your way.
Charges for taxis at the airport are more expensive than regular taxis as it is a federal zone with extra taxes and higher rates. If you are adventurous, or on a strict budget, you can walk some 150 yards to the pedestrian bridge over the highway, cross to the other side, and flag down a normal taxi (there are some there already). That’ll save you about $5-10 dollars US. For those that are traveling light, you can even catch a local bus for $0.50 USD on the airport side for Marina and Downtown Vallarta, or cross the bridge for the ones heading to Nuevo Vallarta and further north.
Where is the airport located?
The International PV Airport is flanked by the Ameca River and Jarretaderas to the north, Las Juntas to the east, the Pacific Ocean to the west, and Marina Vallarta to the south.
How to get a cheap taxi out of the Airport
If you are not traveling too heavily, without too much luggage, a great tip for saving on the Puerto Vallarta Airport taxi rates is to go catch a normal taxi on the other side of the highway.
Airports and harbors, among others, are federal areas and taxis there have to have special permits and pay extra taxes and licenses, so they charge more than the normal taxis around town.
The following video shows you how you can leave the area and catch a normal PV taxi from the airport to the rest of the city and surroundings.
If you cross the highway, you’ll also be able to Uber into town, as Uber will not pick you up on the airport premises, not only because it’s illegal, but they can also get a big fine and maybe even get detained.
I talked to the taxi drivers and they provided a phone number to call (it’s at the end of the video) and they guaranteed that they would charge half of the Puerto Vallarta taxi rates or what the PV Airport taxis had quoted you.

How much should a taxi cost from the airport to Dreams Bahia Mita if we walk across the highway? How safe are those taxis and is there any we should avoid? Also, is there a premium lounge at the airport?
This section will give you the prices you need: https://www.puertovallarta.net/fast_facts/airport-taxi-rates
This airport is a total disaster and word is getting out on social media about what a mess it is how long it takes to get through all the long lines. Why do you have all the planes come in at basically the same time overwhelming your system? This is terrible poor planning
Please contact the airport administration with your comments, we are not their employees, nor do we have the power to change anything there.
Personally when I arrived from Toronto Canada last time in Dec 2021, things were a breeze. I imagine that it’s the airlines that have specific schedules that coincide, for example, when I arrived from LAX in Dec. 2019 we arrived with various other USA flights so it can also be an airline issue.

How do I get ahold of lost and found at the airport
This is t heir contact page: https://www.aeropuertosgap.com.mx/en/contact-us.html

Can I get a COVID test and results at the airport prior to boarding a flight to toronto?
There are various testing locations, the fastest I found were at the parking lot of Puerto Mágico (close to the cruise ship terminal), they gave me the results in a matter of hours, the one by the airport needed 48 hours at least…
I would like to travel to PV from Canada but I’m concerned about all the luggage that is mysteriously going missing. One girl went back to the airport and insisted her luggage was there. This guy took her off site and she found a room full of luggage and hers was there after being told it wasn’t. Items are being stolen left, right and centre out of traveler luggage. Doesn’t make me feel that it’s a safe airport to land. I’d like to know how the security can be so weak at an airport. This will hurt the economy eventually. Very disturbing!!!
Comments are not reviewed and published in real-time. There is neither the need to immediately jump to the conclusion we are in some way colluded with criminals and only publish what’s “nice” and “good”, that is just slanderous and makes me doubt your good intentions.
Secondly, all airports have storage rooms where luggage that is not picked up on time is stored. It is possible this was what she visited? I would be a bit more cautious and generous when transmitting second-hand experiences and would avoid jumping to conclusions.
In any case, we are not part of the airport and have nothing to protect or hide, as we are not paid or supported by them in any way. I’ve travelled to PV more than two dozen times and have never had issues with anything stolen in or out of the airport.
Greetings
Hey buddy, luggage goes missing left and right in Canadian airports as well. Why don’t you write an expose on that? Careless airport staff and airline staff on-ground up in CAD are just as bad in my experience. Here’s a suggestion: if it’s so bad then stop travelling with so much luggage!!! Why do people like you need everything and the kitchen sink for a couple of weeks or months?? Learn to live without a few things and travel lighter, m***n!
Can we get a bus from the airport to downtown PV ?
Yes, the local buses take off from right below the pedestrian bridge over the highway on the south side of the Airport. You’ll have to arrive with very little luggage (carry-on at most) to comfortably use the public transport buses, though.
Thanks for this very helpful airport information post! I appreciate it!
And thank you for taking the time to let us know that it’s useful, always nice to know we are helping in some way.
Greetings!
No where on any site does it talk about what language(s) are readily spoken in PV. I’m hoping English is at the top of the list for popularity in PV
Spanish is the official language in Puerto Vallarta and Mexico, but English is the second most spoken language in town. You can’t get a job in the tourism industry if you don’t…
Can you buy a SIM card at the airport when you arrive at the airport thank you
Yes, it’s what I normally do. Most of the local cellphone companies offer new numbers (more expensive) or recycled cellphone numbers (cheaper), that you can purchase to use the local networks. In 2019 I paid 200 pesos. This time in 2021 I got one for 50 pesos.
Me wife is in a wheelchair. Does the airport have ambilifts to help her off and on the plane?
This is very specific, I would recommend contacting the airport directly (we do not work for them) at https://www.aeropuertosgap.com.mx/en/contact-us.html
Greetings
Are there places at the airport that can help break larger notes from the ATM into smaller ones for tips and things from smaller stores?
You can ask, some may, but I normally take the easiest tack and buy something that costs about 10% the bill and use the change. My normal victim is the OXXO out on the southern side of the parking lot (just out from the airport to the left).
Greetings
Hi, how can I contact security at this airport for lost and found inquiries
This is their contact page: https://www.aeropuertosgap.com.mx/en/contact-us.html
Greetings
We had a great experience flying in from Phoenix on a Saturday. Got in on time, got our luggage right away and breezed thru customs.
Good to know not everything is bad :-) I’ve also arrived many a time to PV without a hitch, hope it continues that way for me and the majority too. Greetings.
Is there a pharmacy, or duty free shop after arrival, before or after going through customs
Wondering if PVR has wheelchairs available for passengers use while in the airport.
Contact Leonel, our PV expert, the info is in the footer of each page. Greetings.
Can you take a sandwich through security before departures?
Could you please tell me the names of the boutiques or kiosks that sell local SIM cards. Thank you.
I’d go to the OXXO in the airport’s parking lot. Greetings
This is a great site. Thank you very much. Do you still recommend the OXXO shop for SIM cards? I would never have guessed that. Second question: for a bus into PV, how far from the airport itself do I walk to find a bus stop? Past the Casino to the Plaza Marina?
Thanks very much
Gord
Thanks Gord, working a lot on the new version, sorry for the late reply. Yes, OXXO for sims. There’s a public transit bus stop below the pedestrian bridge on the south side of the airport. Walking out of the airports going directly towards the highway, you turn left at the end of the building and there under the bridge there is a stop. Haven’t used it myself, so I am not completely sure who stops there, but that would be my first place to try. If not, then yes, walk towards the Marina along the road to the right.
I will land in Hall B on an international flight. I have a connecting flight in the domestic terminal Hall A. How do I get from B to A after going through customs ?
Any chance you can tell me how much we should pay a porter (arrival). My DW is using a walker and we have 2 suitcases — a suitcase containing medical equipment —a carry on and a folding bicycle
My bags are there in the airport as per my air tags locating service They were not put on my next flight to Guadalarja. This was on Jan 9th. I have been dealing with both airlines since then but nothing yet. Can I fly back and get them myself or can someone at the airport help me with this?
Please contact the airport reps at https://www.aeropuertosgap.com.mx/en/contact-us.html (we are not the airport representatives). Good luck!
Greetings
I am looking to park my car for two days is there a specific spot or can I just park in the reg airport parking?
Do you know, coming from YVR, which terminal the plane would land in (A or B)? or does it vary?
PS informative site.
Thank you.
Thanks KP, A is only for national flights. You should arrive at B. Greetings.
