Puerto Vallarta Aims for Blue Flag Recognition for Twelve Beaches
Puerto Vallarta has set an ambitious goal to achieve the prestigious Blue Flag certification for at least 30% of its beaches, which equates to twelve locations. This announcement was made by the Jalisco Secretary of Tourism (Secturjal), headed by Michelle Fridman Hirsch. The Blue Flag award, granted by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), recognizes beaches that demonstrate excellence in environmental sustainability efforts.
The agreement to pursue this certification was formalized with the signing of a pact between the head of Secturjal, Puerto Vallarta authorities, and the Director of Operations of FEE Mexico, Diego Díaz Hernández. The twelve beaches in Puerto Vallarta targeted for this recognition include those at the Marriott, Westin, and Sheraton hotels, as well as Mismaloya, Garza Blanca, Palmares, El Nogalito, Conchas Chinas I, Conchas Chinas II, Amapas, Playa de Oro, and Camarones.
The Blue Flag program is a globally recognized certification that promotes sustainable development in coastal areas and bodies of water. It achieves this by assessing and certifying sites based on stringent criteria in areas such as water quality, safety, environmental education, services and infrastructure, as well as environmental management. According to Secturjal, receiving the Blue Flag certification would signify that Puerto Vallarta’s beaches are clean, safe, accessible, well-managed, and offer high-quality tourism experiences.
