Inauguration of the Day of the Dead Festival in Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta, Jal.- “The Day of the Dead is a proudly Mexican millenary tradition that distinguishes us in the world—a celebration that has transcended time, merging pre-Hispanic culture and customs to give way to the greatest of our celebrations, on November 2, in which we make an altar dedicated to our loved ones who have passed away and visit cemeteries.”

Professor Luis Alberto Michel Rodrguez said this at the Day of the Dead Festival 2022 in Puerto Vallarta, “a ritual that continues to link our families, friends, and generations.”

Prof. Michel led the daytime illumination of the gigantic catrina near the Malecon Lighthouse, a renowned hallmark of Mexican idiosyncrasy.

The Catrina is a magnificent, graceful, and feathery figure, detailed by Guadalupe Posadas and utilized in Porfirio Diaz’s period to criticize some features of our country’s social milieu, much as we know now with the details supplied by Diego Rivera in his 1947 work “Sueo de una tarde dominical en la alameda.”

He underlined that this event represents a beautiful Mexican catrina, 23 meters tall, in blue tones that suggest the sea, and its superb decoration reminds us of our country’s traditions. It also aspires to break the Guinness record for the highest catrina in the world.

Prof. Michel praised the Monumental Catrina’s design by Vallarta native Alondra Muca and the efforts of everyone involved.

She complimented the companies that decorated our boardwalk with catrina palms and big skulls.

The celebration acknowledged Universidad Vizcaya de las Americas for the exquisite pan de muerto produced by gastronomy students under Chef Pablo Antonio Diaz, with a Catrina figure. More than 2,000 slices of bread were savored by hundreds of Vallartenses.
