The Mexican Federal Government on October 14th officially announced through the Ministry of the Navy the “Regata Copa Mexico Olympic Edition”, to be held in Riviera Nayarit from March 2nd till 18th next year, 2012. This competition is expected to have over 2,500 sailors from 26 countries, which will participate in seven different categories.
“High-endurance sporting events help us reach a key tourism niche market that attracts visitors to Riviera Nayarit. In 2010, the event brought in a high number of visiting competitors from 20 countries, and helped promote our destination along with local economic benefits. In 2012, we’re expecting that these effects will be even greater,” stated Fernando Gonz·lez Ortega, Riviera Nayarit Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) President.
The “Regata Copa Mexico Olympic Edition” will help promote the natural beauty and infrastructure of the Mexican Pacific coast, it will help boost tourism to our country, and will benefit the local economy and sponsor sailing as a sport. The Federal Tourism Secretariat, the Government of Nayarit, the Mexican Sailing Federation, and the CVB of Riviera Nayarit will also support the event itself.
The Regata Copa Mexico will include the following categories: Mexorc (Oce·nicas), J24, Windsurf, Kitesurf, Laser, 420, and Optimist, this last category will attract young competitors between 6 and 14 years old.
The Regata Copa Mexico Olympic Edition competition will be part of the “Nautical Extravaganza”, which will take place next during March 2012 in Riviera Nayarit, as will, at least, three other major nautical events scheduled to take place here: The Vallarta Race, a competition between San Diego and Punta Mita to be held from March 1 to 10, 2012; the International Bahia de Banderas Regatta, which will be hosted by the Yacht Club of Nuevo Vallarta from March 20 to 24, and the Punta Sayulita Longboard & SUP Classic, which will assemble the best international surfers between March 9 and 11 next year too.
“By promoting the touristic development of our State, we’ve found a historic opportunity to begin developing a new tourist destination for the people of Nayarit, therefore, the marketing efforts by the Riviera Nayarit CVB follow the State Governor, Roberto Sandoval’s goals, which is to work for the local people,” concluded Gonz·lez Ortega.
